The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel Review
The truth: Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris on September 28, 1330. Nearly 700 years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest Alchemyst of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life. The records show that he died in 1418. But his tomb is empty. The legend: Nicholas Flamel lives. But only because he has been making the elixir of life for centuries. The secret of eternal life is hidden within the book he protects—the Book of Abraham the Mage. It's the most powerful book that has ever existed. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world. That's exactly what Dr. John Dee plans to do when he steals it. Humankind won't know what's happening until it's too late. And if the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it. Sometimes legends are true. And Sophie and Josh Newman are about to find themselves in the middle of the greatest legend of all time. From the Hardcover edition. User Submitted The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel ReviewsNovember 20, 2008 Alchemyst: Fun and suspensing!!! The Alchemyst is one of the best books I have ever read. It is about these twins Sophie and Josh who come upon the famous alchemyst Nicholas Flamel. They go on a wild and crazy adventure to learn magic powers and get the Book of Abraham the Mage bake from Dr. John Dee. I won't tell everything , but I promise you once you start you won't put it down. November 13, 2008 a great blend of myth and magic This book is about twins Sophie and Josh Newman and there adventures with the immortal Nicholas Flamel after seeing him duel the evil magian John Dee. It is a great book especially for fans of myths and legends October 31, 2008 Good fantasy reading This book was amazing...a very quick read, and holds your interest. Would highly recommend if you're looking for something in the Harry Potter genre. October 30, 2008 There's no magic here! Although the premise of the book is very interesting, the writing is horribly underdeveloped and obvious. The plot is very poorly contrived and the book seems very amateurish. This was a great disappointment. The editor(s) should have helped the author produce a higher quality book. I am uncertain as to how this book became published in its current state. Instead of this book, try Harry Potter, The Eldest, Twilight, or Abhorsen. October 9, 2008 Easy to read, explore imagination. Interesting story. I picked it up in the library and read it from cover to cover. It reminds me of Harry Potter. September 25, 2008 Flat characters.... The ideas behind the story for this book are interesting, unfortunately, the writing is not. I found the characters flat and one dimensional. I honestly found it difficult to care what, if anything, happened to them. I also found the writing style repetitive and overly dramatic. The book just couldn't keep my attention.. and with a story based on magic, elder races, immortal men and a fight for humanity.. it should have. Such a shame. September 25, 2008 Excellent book I wasn't sure what to expect with this book other than magic and adventure. On the first page I was hooked. For me a book has to start good and stay good all the way through, this did that. I immediatley loved Josh and Sophie and their closeness thoughout this book his heartwarming. I can't say I've loved Nicholas Flamel, he's a very strong character (hence it's his story) but he's not the one I found myself wanting to follow. Scatty is great, the perfect warrior. Dee is the perfect bad guy, he's cunning, sly, and very bad. I loved how this book took our modern age, mixed it with magic and mythology. A true page turner that does leave you hanging. After finishing this book you will have to read the next book. I myself cannot wait to read the next installment. Truly a book I'll keep on my bookshelf to be read again, the adventure is that good, for adults and children. September 24, 2008 Da Vinci Code for younger readers?? Readers grade 5/6 and up may enjoy this fast-paced mix of myths, the myriad of characters, the inclusion of modern gadgets and the easy sentence structure. However, most characters are flat, cliffhangers at the end of each chapter remind us of "The Da Vinci Code", and the author's habit of endlessly repeating facts and sentences really spoils the fun. The author doesn't give anyone the smallest change to wonder about the character's feelings or motivations: We are being TOLD, without mercy! Events are piled up, monster upon monster, challenge upon challenge, barely time to catch a breath and all in two days' time. No wonder, the main characters- the "twins of legend" (and don't you dare forget it!) Sophie and Josh, are exhausted all the time and Nicholas Flamel ages before our very eyes. And yet, I will probably read the sequel to find out what happened to Scatty..... September 22, 2008 GREAT book to start a great series! Anyone who liked the Harry Potter series will LOVE this series. It is inventive and fascinating! It is a very easy read for all ages. September 15, 2008 History and mythology join forces for fantasy adventure! I really enjoyed this book! It combines many historical facts along with lots of mythology to bring about an incredible story and adventure. The story mainly revolves around two teens, twins, Sophie and Josh. They are kind of in the wrong place at the wrong time and find out all about Nicholas Flamel and the Codex book. Their lives change in an instant as they are whisked away into a world of magic and mythological folklore. A great adventure, and I cannot wait to read the sequel!
