A Race Against Time Little Willy's grandfather is sick, and it's up to Willy to save their farm from tax collectors. Their only hope is the prize money from the National Dogsled Race. But a lot of other people want to win the race, too, including Stone Fox, who has never lost a race in his life. Do Willy and his dog Searchlight stand a chance against the toughest racers around? Can they win the race to save the farm -- and Grandfather -- before it's too late?
User Submitted Stone Fox Reviews November 14, 2008 A Favorite as a Child, Revisited as an Adult I first read this book in grade school with the help of my mom. I remember it fondly as a heroic tale with a sad ending. I remember the illustrations vividly.
I walked past this book at the book store recently and was thrilled to see it and remember how much I had enjoyed it. I read it that night.
In all honestly, I was greatly disappointed. I found the story dull, and the ending extrememly saddening. I cried and cried, but mostly I was upset that the story didn't warrant such a heart tug at the end. And I found myself resentful of the grandfather.
Maybe this book is great if you are 6, but not 26.
The illustrations are still outstanding.
October 31, 2008 Stone Fox Willy and his grandfather live on a farm. Willy's grandfather is sick and is about to lose the farm because he can't pay the taxes. Willy meets an Indian called Stone Fox. Stone Fox races every year in the dog-sled races held near the farm. Stone fox never loses the race Willy enters the race to hopefully win the [..] prize. Near the end of the race, a surprising turn of events happens. But I'm not going to tell you. You'll have to read the book yourself
September 29, 2008 Excellent I received my book within 24 hours of ordering and it was in excellent condition. I would definately purchase again from Amazon.com.
August 7, 2008 Upset child This story is very obviously wonderfully written and very touching. However, I am horrified that the dog dies in the end. My daughter is 9 and LOVES animals and she was devastated. I just had to remind her that it was just a story. It was on her summer reading list and I am going to suggest that they change it for next year.
July 23, 2008 A Beautiful story This book may be short, but it ends on such a great note (sad, but great!) The main character is developed beautiful and as a reader we can understand him completely and we can feel his pain, worry, and frustration. The grandfather is shown with two side, one side not being that pretty. However much the story is about Willy and his grandfather, it is more just about Willy and his dog, and it is this relationship that makes the book what it is, beautiful. I would recommend this to anyone, adult and child alike.
July 20, 2008 A Book Review by Laura This book, Stone Fox, is a book anyone in the world would want to read. This book is about a boy, Little Willy, whose grandfather is ill. So Little Willy needs $500. When Little Willy goes to the store with his dog Searchlight they find a form that says dogsled racing. It says that if you win the dogsled race you get $500. So Little Willy and Searchlight try out. They find out that the Indian who has never lost a race is doing it. Will Little Willy lose or not?
This book is my favorite book because you never know what is going to happen. Like, you don't know if Little Willy and Searchlight are going to win the race or not. It is always that you have to read to find the treasure. You just never want to put Stone Fox down.
April 2, 2008 Stone Fox - Room 203 3rd Grade Review Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardinier
We read Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardinier. This realistic fiction book is a must read! In this story, Little Willy lives with his Grandfather and dog Searchlight in wintery Wyoming. Grandfather gets very sick, and Little Willy worries he may not survive. Then Little Willy finds out he owes a big tax bill. He needs to pay $500 or they will lose their farm! So Little Willy enters his dog Searchlight into the sled race hoping to win the prize money. Stone Fox, who's never lost a race, also enters. Will Stone Fox keep his victorious record, or will Little Willy overcome the challenge to win the race? Read the book to find out!
You should read this book because it will teach you to face your fears and stay determined! We loved it because it was exciting and inspiring! We were inspired that Little Willy was only 1 of 6 people brave enough to race the intimidating Stone Fox (and the only kid). The description of the neck and neck race was so thrilling, we couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what would happen next! If you like adventure and dogs, this is the book for you! We strongly recommend this book because it is one of the best books we've read all year!
January 7, 2008 Gripping story STONE FOX is one of the best written, most gripping children's stories. I have used it in my classroom with children ages 8 - 12. It is a story about a boy, his dog and his grandfather. It has an exciting plot line with a sled race. However I must warn you.... it has a SAD ending. A sign of a good book, I still cry everytime I read it and I have read it many times.
November 29, 2007 The Dog Race
The Dog Race
Boom the pistol shot up and the race had begun.
Stone Fox is an 81 paged book. Imagine you're self in Wyoming in a dog sled race going against someone you know but doesn't talk to you, and hurts you. It's about a little boy named Little Willy and his dog named Search Light. Search Light is ten years old and Little Willy is ten too. He has no brothers or sisters and lives with his grandfather. They live on a potato farm, and grows potato's every summer. Little Willy wants to save his grandpas farm so he enters a dog sled race to try and win money.
My favorite part is when the race had begun because I like races and I thought that was the best chapter because it was the most interesting chapter in the book.
I think the Authors purpose was to encourage kids to race and do there best.
I think this book is good for young readers .It's also good for kids who love dog's and like to read about dog sled racing. I think kids should read Stone Fox!!!
