Where's My Cow? Review
This is a book about reading a book, User Submitted Where's My Cow? ReviewsJuly 28, 2008 Excellent Illustrated Discworld Romp Though generally found in the children's picture books, this is actually an illustrated book for adult fans of the Discworld--particularly those familiar with Thud! "Where's My Cow" starts out as the picture book Sam Vimes reads to young Sam in Thud! and Pratchett has, with his usual genius, taken it and given it the ol' Discworld flavor and turned it into a hilarious romp through Ankh-Morpork. Grant's illustrations are wonderful, capturing some of the characters perfectly (Vetinari, in particular) and his fanciful book within a book drawings add a wonderful other-world feel. While not recommended as a children's picture book in general, this is wonderful addition for Discworld fans. June 4, 2008 Not quite the book I thought it was I kind of thought this book would be more like the fictional book "Where's my Cow?" described in "Nightwatch", instead it is a mix of that and the book Sam Vimes thought it should be. The difference is that the first would be enjoyed by the child, the other would be more enjoyed by a fan of Terry pratchett who is reading to a child. May 21, 2008 Great book for all ages Terry Pratchett -- ably assisted by artist Melvyn Grant -- has written another great book. This one can be enjoyed even if you're not familiar with the Discworld series. May 14, 2008 Discworld fans, untie! My daughters introduced me to the wonderful world of Terry Pratchett, and I've bought a copy of this for each of them by way of thanks. I have no idea if it would mean anything to a person who doesn't know Discworld, but for me it's just lovely. March 2, 2008 For children, or not for children? That is probably the question you are asking yourself if you are considering this book. The question you should be asking is "do you love diskworld?" This is sort of a storybook in the childrens' style, but isn't really fun for a child to be read to. This book has the same audience as all of Terry's other Diskworld books. But if you have children it will be even better. January 29, 2008 WHERE'S MY COW? by Terry Pratchett and Melvyn Grant Where's My Cow? is a tie-in with Pratchett's Discworld novel Thud!. It is ostensibly a children's book, although the target audience is quite obviously Discworld fans of all ages. This is perfectly in keeping with the burgeoning number of Discworld-related books that have been cranked out lately. This is not, as might be expected, the version that appears in that book. Instead, Where's My Cow? is about Sam Vimes reading Where's My Cow? to his son, just as he did in Thud!. Mild silliness ensues. The problem is that there isn't really anything here that wasn't also in Thud!. There have been a lot of complaints about Melvyn Grant's illustrations, mostly about his depiction of Vimes. Well, that's artistic expression for you. There's nothing terrible about the illustrations, even if they aren't great. Where's My Cow? is really for serious Discworld fans only, most of whom will only be inclined to read it once. If you aren't a Discworld fan, you won't get it. TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT December 29, 2007 Original, great illustrations! The story is original, the illustrations are excellent! A great book to read to children! December 4, 2007 An incredibly fun book We got this book as a gift for our newborn son. And it has quickly become one of the favorites for the household. The story within a story within a story format makes for a fun read. And my son (now 2) is starting to recognize pieces from the story before we ever get there. If you're looking for a fun bedtime read, it can't get much better than this! September 15, 2007 My 14 month old LOVES to be read this book! I have to disagree with those who said this is not a good children's book. We were given this book as a gift by my aunt who loves cows and has no idea who Terry Pratchett is. She was rather surprised by the book but sent it anyway. I have read some of Pratchett's other books so I knew more of what I was in for when I read it to my daughter, who now insists on hearing it several times a day. She loves the pictures, they are detailed and cartoony at the same time. And she loves all the different animal noises and voices as long as they are read with enthusiasm. I think children love being read to by the adults that love them regardless of the story, and wouldn't you rather read your kids a book you enjoy too? One of my favorite things is hearing how different people read the story, like my mother-in-law. I wish I could find more books like it. July 24, 2007 Not what you're looking for in a children's book... While I love Terry Pratchett's witty satire in his DiscWorld books, I think he is out of his element in this "children's book". I have a two year old daughter, who like most children her age has a limited attention span. I was looking for something similar to the simple straight-forward version in Thud, something maybe 10-20 pages long (if that) that kind of went through different animals and maybe a dragon or a wizard and finally a cow, so that the young reader can shout "that's my cow!" What you get is an increasingly convoluted plot that tells the story of Vimes reading to his kid. The illustration is an obviously computer-generated mish mash of busy images which do nothing to enhance the story. So instead of becoming a household name in children's books like your Maurice Sendak's or Dr. Seusses, Pratchett appears to be a money-hungry author looking to capitalize on some cross-merchandising, which he has done before with all the companion books to the DiscWorld. It seems to me a case of too many people involved in this project, and none of them stopped the process and said, "I think we're trying to do too much with this. Let's remember who our target audience is." But Pratchett is one of my favorite authors, and I eagerly look forward to his next work of ADULT fantasy. For more Where's My Cow? reviews click here.
