"This is the story that I tell my grandchildren at Christmas. I hope that this book will bring the tradition of sharing history to families all across America."

-- Lynne Cheney

Christmas night, 1776, was a troubled time for our young country. In the six months since the Declaration of Independence had been signed, General George Washington and his troops had suffered defeat after defeat at the hands of the British. It looked as though our struggle for independence might be doomed, when Washington made a bold decision. He would lead the main body of his army across the Delaware River and launch a surprise attack on enemy forces.

Washington and his men were going against the odds. It seemed impossible that the ragtag Americans could succeed against the mightiest power in the world. But the men who started across the icy Delaware loved their country and their leader. Under his command they would turn the tide of battle and change the course of history.

Best-selling author Lynne Cheney tells the dramatic story of the military campaign that began on Christmas night in 1776. When Washington Crossed the Delaware will teach the young about the heroism, persistence, and patriotism of those who came before them.

A wonderful history we all can learn from
As we enter into another heated political season, it is important to remember our history, to recall where we came from and to reflect on the sacrifices our forefathers made in order for us to sling mud at one another. Mrs. Cheney's new book, "We the People, The Story of our Constitution" gives us the opportunity to explain to our children and refresh our memories on how special our nation is and respect the determination of Washington, Madison and Franklin.

Beautifully written and illustrated -- a truly wonderful book for children, parents and all citizens of our nation!

History at its finest!
A contemporary retelling of one of the greatest military victories in our nation's history. My favorite part is when Washington tells his assembled troups, "Yea, verily, I wouldst not want thine smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud over Trenton," setting a precedent for military action that has rightly endured for centuries.

A wonderfully illustrated and easy to understand book
I bought this book for my son's 5th birthday. He has asked me to read it nearly every night since. This exciting story is written in plain language yet the message is not watered down. The illustrations are so colorful and exciting for my son that he wants to look at the book by a small reading light before going to sleep.

I highly recommend this book for children of any age.

Stirring Story Captures Young Listeners
My four children sat enraptured as I read Lynne Cheney's "When Washington Crossed the Delaware" to them last night.

This book is a patriotic primer on one of the most stirring stories of the Revolutionary War: The Battles of Trenton and Princeton. Youngsters will marvel at hearing the story of George Washington -- whose winter soldiers were facing starvation, lack of footwear and most importantly demoralization having been chased out of New York and across New Jersey the months before - saving the Revolution by the strength of his personal character and daring.

Washington's Christmas Night crossing of the Delaware River and attack on Trenton was exactly the bold and decisive move depicted in Cheney's book. This story is well told, interesting enough for older elementary school kids, while short and direct enough so first graders will get the gist. It is illustrated with big pictures that capture the action and draw listeners into the story.

A classic that will help instruct youngsters as to the romance of our founding.

VERY condensed version.
Huge pictures, fourteen half-pages of story leaves a young reader with a very vague picture of American history.

Drama As It Should Be - REAL
Although the story is familiar - at least it should be - Lynne Cheney does an excellent job adding colors and flourishes to an already inspirational story worthy of the holiday it occurred on. To those who sit in warmth and criticize this most rich of our histories, pick up this book, throw on an old shirt, and sit outside in the cold for an hour with your bare feet in the snow and feel how it felt just for a minute to have to fight for your (and our) religious and other freedoms - not just talk about them. Great Job Lynne - thank you.
