To Market, To Market Review
Anne Miranda’s inventive twist on a classic rhyme tells what happens after a shopper goes “to market, to market, to buy a fat pig.” Back home the pig promptly escapes, and soon the pig’s in the kitchen, the lamb’s on the bed, the cow’s on the couch--and the rest of the animals are wreaking havoc throughout the house. User Submitted To Market, To Market ReviewsNovember 3, 2008 Great Book I saw this book at a friend's house when my daughter was 6 months old and fell in love with it. I bought a copy for us and regularly buy copies for friends. My daughter, now 2 years old, loves to be read to and won't go to bed without six or seven or eight books. To Market To Market is still a favorite. September 14, 2008 Hilarious and animal-friendly ! The pictures in this book are HILARIOUS !!!! This is a very funny, upbeat book with a bit of a vegetarian theme in a light-handed way. After reading it, our 5-yo looked back through the pictures and said "I think she bought some pets !!!" We borrowed it from the library but I am going to buy a copy to own just because the pictures are so funny...and the way the lady looks at the end of her shopping trips is *exactly* how I feel after shopping with our kids !!! April 29, 2008 Fun twist on the old nursery rhyme We first saw this book at our local Children's Museum. After reading it, I had to have this as part of our home library. The illustrations are so original, as is the funny story. It makes us laugh each time we read it together. Plus, the final soup is made of lots of different kinds of vegetables--a great healthy meal reinforcement for your preschooler. February 13, 2008 A great new version of an old standard My grandmother used to tell me this story and now I can pass that on to my grandchildren who unfortunately do not live in the same state. It's a wonderful story (with lines I still quote as an adult!) and terrific illustrations that will make you laugh right out loud. January 18, 2008 Our favorite The juxtaposition of the photograph-like mishmashed black and white backgrounds with the colorful illustrations of characters and key items make this book fun and interesting to look at. The twist on the nursery rhyme is hilarious and easy for children to identify with. My child loves to point out the different animals and vegetables and always laughs throughout the story (a lamb hanging out in the diswasher, etc gets lots of giggles). Makes vegetables fun. February 3, 2007 one of our top 5 favorites! We just love the cadence of the words, so fun to read. And the art is so unique, mixing photography with drawing of the characters. My 3 year old picks this one over and over. GREAT gift for a vegetarian friend! (the lady in the book gets so fed up going to Market and managing the animals and fish she has purchased, that she finally gives up and makes veggie soup for everyone~animals included) We are not vegetarians, and this book in no way was preaching Veganism...but it would be appreciated on another level by a Vegan I think. Just buy it...its great. January 15, 2007 A great adaption of an old nursery rhyme Anne Miranda made a fun story out of a small nursery rhyme. The book keeps the rhythm of the old rhyme but you will have trouble keeping it as the artwork has many things to take you away from the story. The pictures made my daughter stay on each page for a little while as she had to see what happened as each animal started to trash the old lady's house. It's a great little book and I have had to read it every night. A couple times in fact. August 22, 2006 We keep coming back to the market We have three daughters and our oldest received this as a gift when she was little. It has been a favorite with all three girls. The games that we play as we read the book grow with the child: There's the "name that animal" game, as our shopper returns from the market with a growing menagerie; the "Where's the animal?" game (not all the animals are easy to spot) and, as they get to know the text of the book, the "finish the sentence" game (Parent: "There's a duck on my..." Child: "Head"). The illustrations are fresh and interesting enough that they keep younger children focused and the sense of humor keeps the slightly older ones amused (for example, after our heroine's goat eats her shoe, you see her hobbling back to the market wearing only one bright purple shoe). As a reader, the wonderful thing about this book is that the more that you invest in your reading of it, the greater the return you get from your audience: as the heroine's exasperation increases, so can yours; when the poor shopper reaches the end of your tether, you can too; when she collapses with exhaustion at the end of the book, you can too. I never tire of this book and would strongly recommend it--for your child or grandchild or whoever--but choose it as a book you'd like to read out loud and give it to someone who wants to hear it, or, alternatively give it to a parent who loves to give their bed-time reading everything they've got. December 12, 2003 The best "non-page-turner" This fun book has a great rhythm you will want to keep turning the pages and keep up with the beat, but if you read this to your children you won't get to turn the pages at your desired pace because they will love the pictures. The illustrations are great. Filled with animals and each one has a personality, as does the main character (she becomes more and more frustrated as the story moves along and her home is filled with animals who take over her house). There are so many cute details in the illustrations you children will find more things to discover with many repetitions of the book. You will read this book many times if you own it. Sometimes with your children and maybe even on your own without them there to distract you! April 26, 2003 My kids love this one! My 4 and 2 year old just love this book. It is a very simple book and I do think the illustrations are very interesting and detailed.I ordered this online and when I received it and read it myself, before I read it to them, I didn't think they would like it much, well, I was wrong! The 5 star rating is from my kids, and they are the ones who love it, and for a kids book ,that is all that matters! For more To Market, To Market reviews click here.
