Three Tales of My Father's Dragon Review
User Submitted Three Tales of My Father's Dragon ReviewsOctober 7, 2008 Disappointed: a dissenting voice I was looking forward to receiving this book, following rave reviews and awards. But both I and my twin nearly-five-year-olds have been very much disappointed, and are unlikely to finish the second book (or even start the third) in this three-volume compilation. While the theme and content (a quest to rescue a baby dragon, subsequent adventures with dragon) was extremely appealing given this audience's passions, the poor execution of this story neutered the otherwise promising tale. The first person narrator describing a third person protagonist (the protagonist is "my father" in each sentence) is a tortured device which annoys, and adds nothing (it's not as though this relationship ever plays a role in the story) and a red herring / non-sequitur is the informant cat. There was little characterisation, so we didn't really get a sense of the heroic adventure that the plot called for and consequently, we failed to become engaged. And to this post-Pippi Longstocking generation there was a certain anticlimatic lack of ingenuity in the uses to which the backpack contents were put. Most disappointing for me was the artlessness in the telling. I longed for language that would stretch or bounce or play, given all else that was missing in the book. But it wasn't there. On the plus side, once the protagonist reaches the island, the adventure paces well with a single digestible adventurelet in each chapter. The final chapter worked well too, where the animals all band together in one last-ditch attempt to prevent the rescue. Admittedly, they're reasonably bright kids - it could be that it would suit a younger mind. If we get through the second (and third) volumes, I'll post an update. BTW this edition has pages that are more a paperback than a hardback quality. September 4, 2008 WARNING! Black & White Illustrations This edition does not have color illustrations. When I purchased it, I was under the impression that it did. They are printed in black and white. The paper in this edition is the sort of paper used in a low quality trade paperback: this isn't really a nice edition. I'm not very pleased. But the story itself is worth reading in any edition! Wonderful book! April 26, 2008 Fantastic Three Tales This is a wonderful three-in-one storybook. We are reading it as a family and it is so clever and beautifully written. I would highly recommend; you will not be disappointed. April 5, 2008 Three Tales of my Fathers Dragon Excellent children's book! I highly recommend it to all people young and old. Great illustrations and wonderful imagination!!! A classic! April 2, 2008 Fabulous for reading together! My wife bought this on recommendation from another Amazon parent and we have enjoyed it very much! We curl up in bed together with our 4.5 yo son and 7+ yo daughter and read a couple of chapters each night. The children adore the story line, Elmer's cleverness and everything about this charming, delightful, classic series. Absolutely get this trilogy to share with your children and your grandchildren; it's wonderful! March 28, 2008 Kindergarten read-aloud I could have purchased each book individually, but bought the three in one version. I read the book in record time to my class in daily read-aloud sessions because every day they would BEG me to read just one more chapter in the story! They were engaged each day. It is an amazing read-aloud with excitement, adventure and thrilling parts that kept imaginations running and waiting for the next chapter then book~! I know these books will become a part of my read-aloud for years to come. February 26, 2008 My 3 year old's favorite! This book is my three year old's favorite book. He loves chapter books right now and this book includes three in one. He also loves maps and this book includes a map that connects to the story on the inside of the cover. After reading each chapter he enjoys going back to the map and retelling the story to me. I highly recommend this great family time book! February 22, 2008 Lovely, funny book. My four year old daughter and I really enjoyed this book. Especially the mixed up mouse. February 12, 2008 FANTASTIC!!! My 2 1/2 year old son received this book for Christmas. I was amazed how captivated he was when we read it before bed. My 11 year old daughter even joined in on the fun. Now we are all reading it again and enjoying every minute. It is definately a book I will purchase as a gift for others who enjoy something a bit different from the mainstream books. It is a timeless treaure! January 13, 2008 7 year old reluctant reader LOVES this book! My 7 year old (2nd grader) does not like to read. After reading rave reviews on this series, I bought him the trilogy for Christmas. The fact that it was about a dragon immediately interested him. The inside cover has a map of Tangerina and Wild Island along with notations (the back cover has Popsicornia and Blueland). When he saw this, he became even more engaged - wondering what it was all about. We started reading it together (he would read it aloud, I would read a paragraph here and there to give him a break). The chapters are very short and there are pictures smattered throughout. We would read a chapter or two a night, sometimes three. Not once did he ask me "how many more pages are left in this chapter?" or "When can we be done?" Nor did he complain when I told him it was reading time. At the end of each chapter, my son would go back to the inside cover with the map and point out the places where the action in the previous chapter occurred, telling me in detail what had happened. Not only was he reading it with interest - he was remembering it well enough to tell me about it in detail! I just hope I can find a book as good as this one to keep him going!
