The Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales Review
User Submitted The Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales ReviewsNovember 8, 2007 Fairy Tales I bought this book and must admit to not paying attention to the typeset or quality of the paper. It didn't matter to me because I was still being transported away with the memories of the wonderful fairy tales from my childhood. The book still serves its purpose, the tales are as wonderful and magical as I remember them, and I look forward to reading them out loud to my grandchildren. Better still, the format will still see them enjoying it in their adulthood as it does me. It is good to see these stories have been kept alive and well preserved. For the price, its been well worth it for me. August 6, 2007 HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON MY GRANDKIDS WILL ENJOY THIS AS MUCH AS I DID AS A CHILD WHEN MY MOM READ TO ME. IT HAS ALL HIS WRITINGS. March 10, 2007 Andersen deserves better It is just sad that publishers like this one are opportunistic and know that just because Andersen is on the cover the book will sell. The translations are rickety and unreadable. And the quality of the book is disappointing. I immediately resold mine and bought another, far superior, volume. Don't get taken for a ride. October 27, 2006 This book is for adults as much as children Hans Chrisitian Andersen's fairy tales are incomparable. They have a level of depth absent in any other collection of fairy tales including the Grimm Brothers, Arabian nights etc...He amalgmates magic and reality and seals them in beautiful poetic expression. You will feel pain and love, rejection and hope, despair and persistence. The characters and images are sad yet impeccable. The tales are vivaciously symbolic of your dreams and reality. My favorite tales are The Red Shoes and The Little Mermaid(which is way different from Disney's version). They are a must-read. July 9, 2006 Not for kids I first read HCA when I was about 8 and I remember being baffled at their deviation from the standard "fairy tale" formula. They stayed with me however. I bought this edition because I wanted to explore more of his work and I am very glad I did. I have finished about 3/4ths of this volulme and the richness, satire, obersvation, depth, humor and relevance of the themes continue to awe me. It's not a book for children but for those adults who want to go on adventures with a master storyteller. February 25, 2006 Every one should read This is the perfect gift for a child or adult of any age who enjoys reading. February 24, 2006 Childhood Storytime Staple I had a version of this book when I was a kid and was super excited to be able to share these tales with my own children. There aren't a lot of illustrations for the kids to look at, which I love because it forces my kids to use their imaginations. So this is a book that is best for before bed time reading and is sure to inspire wonderful Dreams! There are very few short stories in this collection. Most of them are very long and the kids will go to sleep before you reach the end. But if you're familiar with the enchanting tale weaving of Andersen, you know as a parent, you will want to finish the stories to satisfy your own curiosities. A must have for any household with Kids. Pages are thin and if you cry on any page is goes through multiple stories...but that definitely adds character to our book! Enjoy! July 20, 2005 Mediocre Quality This is a decent collection of tales. All the popular stories are included; however, there are some tales that didn't make much sense. Readability is average. I wouldn't recommend giving this book to a child to read. As for a parent reading this book to his/her child, the overuse of colons, semi-colons, and commas can make for difficult story telling. Overall, if you're looking for a good collection of tales by Hans Christian Andersen either just to keep or to read to your child, you may want to pass on this book. January 31, 2005 The translations are terrible! Skip this one and wait for the new translation of 30 of the best tales coming out from Penguin next month, by the great Tiina Nunnally. Andersen's true voice is heard at last! All the old rewrites begone! May 6, 2004 Wonderful Tales Grimms-You call the Best but Hans Anderson, You call it a 'Classic of the classics' coz the beautiful stories lets your imagination go surfing on 'cloud nine' and these tales conveys moralistic message. Though the illustrations are in black and white, it doesn't matter as long as the stories are well read. Children learn to explore and imagine by listening and this is a book that every parent would love to read and narrate the stories to their loved ones. The Princess and the Pea is my fav' story and so is the 'Emperor's clothes' - Totally, an amazing fairy tales of Hans Anderson that grips you delightfully reading even as an adult. It would have been much better if more attention was given to make the book more trendy n new mod edition. Hans Anderson is so popular read that one can't resist a pick of any book that has his tales. An enchanting collection by bedside to read out to kid, any time, any day - A nice Pick 'Content is king' I would say! For more The Complete Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales reviews click here.
