The Story of the World CD audiobook is a collaboration between Jim Weiss, whose voice is "liquid gold" (CNN TV), and Susan Wise Bauer, whose writing has been described as "timeless and intelligent" (Publishers Weekly). These spirited readings of the first volume in Bauer's history series bring to life the stories and records of human history from ancient times to the present.

Written in an engaging, straightforward manner, this volume of the popular Story of the World series weaves world history into a storybook format. The first volume begins with the ancient nomads and ends with the last Roman emperor.

This audio CD edition may be used along with the print books, as a supplement to a traditional history curriculum, or independently. 6 audio CDs.

Warning: Muddled, Christian account: Do not buy
When I first started listening to this series, I found the text engaging, and so did my 7-year old child. I was outraged and dismayed when a discussion of ancient Egypt was followed by a Bible story about Abraham. This story was not prefaced in any way with a reminder that it comes from the Bible. It was presented in the same way as the discussion about Egypt, as though it were fact, which leads me to wonder what other non-factual accounts will be presented on these CDs as fact (I have not finished listening to all the CDs in the set) and to question the author's intentions (is this a Christian rewrite of history?). I was particularly incensed that nowhere in the description of the product was it indicated that there is a definite Christian slant to the material. I would never have bought it if I had known.

Teaching Bible stories is fine -- but not on a history CD! Belatedly, I read the 1-star reviews of the book on which these CDs are based, and discovered that the historical facts in the book (and hence on the CDs) are furthermore inaccurate and often laced with the author's poorly-informed opinions.

Very clear and enjoyable for me and my kids!
I highly recommend this history series for kids of a wide age range. 5-13ish. The kids just don't get this kind of exposure to the world and its history in traditional Public Schools anymore. You will really want to get the book to go with this if really get into it. (to create a time line and see maps and so on...)
We Love this!

too fast!
I have the Story of the World book and workbook, and I thought having it on CD might be nice for the car. I have very much enjoyed the smooth voice of Jim Weiss in several other story cds I have by him. So it made sense to try this one.
Sadly, Jim sounds rushed in this cd. I think that kids will just space out much of what he says, because there are so many facts packed in at such a fast pace. I wish he would have taken his time, and ambled through history at a leisurely pace rather than the slightly tense and frenzied reading that he has done here. I felt compelled to take rushed notes, and stop and replay - not appropriate for this age!

A wonderful addition to our library: both educational and entertaining!
After reading all the reviews about SOTW I was hesitant to buy it. We are a very conservative, Christian, homeschooling family and some of the reviews made me wonder if this would be the best choice for our family. I decided to get the book form of Mystery of History and the audiobook of SOTW to use as a supplement. I haven't opened our Mystery of History yet (though I will soon...) but we finished the whole set of CD's for volume one of SOTW and will start volume 2 tomorrow. We listen to it in the car as we travel. My 7 and 8-year olds beg to hear more history every time we get in the car. My 4 and 5-year olds get a lot out of it as well.

I think listening to someone else read the book makes it more fun for all of us. It helps bring the stories to life. We have all learned so much about ancient history and I'm so grateful. Sure, we've learned a lot of ancient myths and about many of the Greek gods and all, but that is all a part of the history of the various civilizations, and we don't have any trouble explaining to our children what is true and what is make-believe or just plain false.

I would highly recommend this set to any family that wants to increase their knowledge of ancient history.

Excellent
We love these cd's. Everytime we got in the car while we were listening to them my son would beg to get to listen to them. We will definitely listen to them again. Great, thorough information for a 7 year old and for a 37 year old. This book pulled together a lot of pieces of ancient history for me that had previously been a bunch of disjointed facts.

NOT BORING AT ALL! WE LOVE IT!!
I don't know why the same reviewer listed 2 reviews saying this was a boring series, but they couldn't be more wrong. This is the perfect way to explore history, from beginning to end. The narration is fun and interesting. My 8-year-old and 5-year-old love to listen to the stories and enjoy the workbook as well. Even my 2-year-old will listen to it. It is perfect for the car or when you are eating in the morning, etc... Each chapter is about 10-15 minutes and broken down into 5 minute segments so it can be easily interrupted and returned to. I highly recommend this to anyone who finds history to be an important part of their child's education.

Best History for young elementary students. My 6yo LOVES this set.
I remember history as a series of dates and people that were to memorized. I was so nervous about including history in our school day. I ordered the SOTW and braced myself for the rolling eyes and groans. Needless to say, I have been pleasantly surprised. This morning at breakfast, my daughter asked if we were going to have history today because it is her favorite part of school.

The book reads like a story and is packed with information that is easy for young elementary students to understand. My four year old participates in every aspect of our lessons. She shocked her grandparents when she explained to them that Pharaoh Menes was also known as King Narmer and that he unified Egypt. I don't remember ever hearing his name!

This volume is designed to be used in the first grade. It is thoroughly engaging for it's intended audience. I must admit that I also look forward to history "class". I am finally understanding how the story all fits together. Bauer does an excellent job of telling the history and including the geography so that it is easy to see how and why things happened as they did.
