Puff the Magic Dragon Review
User Submitted Puff the Magic Dragon ReviewsNovember 24, 2008 Puff Is Magical I had the pleasure of reading and singing "Puff the Magic Dragon" as a child and now my grandson has the fortune of knowing the book and song as well. The CD of Peter, Paul & Mary singing the title song was an especially added treat. My 6 year old grandson found both the book and the song enchanting and magical. He compared Jackie Paper to Peter Pan. This book is a keeper for our library. It also is illustrated beautifully. October 26, 2008 Treasured by three generations Grandpa and I purchased this for our (then) 3-year old grandson. We knew that his mom had loved the song as a child herself, but we weren't sure how our little guy would feel about dragons in general or Puff in particular. He was thrilled with the beautiful artistry of the book and the story that unfolded within. We think his mom may be just as captivated by it. And all of us enjoyed the experience together of playing the CD, singing along, and following along in the book. Our little guy enjoyed the magic of this set so much he asked to have it put with his "special books" so it will be safe for another day in Honalee. October 21, 2008 Great Book This story has always been special to me, but this book is great. The pictures are so sweet, perfect for the story. If you like this story you have to have this book. September 28, 2008 Timeless classic This has always been one of my favorite childrens books. It inspired a love for dragons in me that continues even today. September 16, 2008 Fun,Fun,Fun to share with kids Surprized the kids in our daycare with this book and cd and I had their attention from beginning to end. Highly recommend this to all who are looking for a good, easy to follow book with good pictures. two thumbs up... September 5, 2008 Puff Comes to Life with Twist Ending Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby The classic song about a boy who grows out of his love for a dragon pal lends itself beautifully to a children's book. The illustrations are simple yet intriguing without being overly cartoonish, as Puff and Jackie Paper act out the verses of the song. And the illustrator adds a lovely twist - a new friend for Puff - to help soften the song's bittersweet ending. I only have two cautions about this book. One is that even with the new ending, the part where Jackie stops visiting Puff is still very sad. Sensitive children might feel heartbroken for a bit. And my other complaint is that the book uses the exact lyrics of the song, except for one place: "Dragons live forever, but not so little boys and girls." Adding girls here completely ruins the rhythm and was unnecessary. Girls won't feel left out, because the illustrations show a girl befriending Puff at the end. August 18, 2008 Beautiful Book It's a beautifully illustrated book. At the bookstore, it came with a matching dragon, just as beautiful. My toddler son asks for this story to be read at bedtime about once a week. He must be holding his stuffed toy dragon while I "sing" the story to him, of course! August 11, 2008 poor CD Book was nice, recording was awful. I did not pass the CD on to my grandchild. I would not like them to remember the song sung like that. August 9, 2008 Puff the Magic Dragon lives on Our 2 1/2 year old grandson Alec loves the songs and the book. On his ride to us every morning, he listens to "Puff the Magic Dragon", repeatedly until he gets here which is 30 minutes both ways. We bought him the book and CD in honor of his new sister Cassie who was born on 8-8-08 weighing in at 8 lbs 8 oz. June 16, 2008 With just a little more effort... Given such a rich subject matter the illustrations should have been more creative. The simplicity and harmony of the original song is lacking on the version provided with the CD so I just play the original version when reading/listening with my son. Doing that also avoids the horrible "but not so little GIRLS AND boys" lyrics revision, at least for pre-readers. There's a typo in the book that annoys me: I believe the words are "Pirate ships would lower their *flags*..." -- in the book it's singular: flag. I personally like the happy ending that the book suggests, though. Summary: my son loves it, and I like it as long as I can listen to the original version of the song while we read.
