Created by Sandra Boynton, Philadelphia Chickens is a family musical in a book, bringing together a full-color songbook of 17 1/2 illustrated story-poems with a full-length, fully orchestrated CD of original songs performed by the likes of Patti LuPone, Kevin Kline, Meryl Streep, The Bacon Brothers, and Laura Linney, who pleads "Please, Can I Keep It?"—it followed me home. / What exactly it is/ I don't know. Also joining in are Eric Stoltz, Natasha Richardson, Scott Bakula, and two Boyntons, including daughter Caitlin McEwan, who performs a piece that every little listener will relate to—a love song to the chocolate chip cookies that are just out of reach. With the collaboration of composer Michael Ford (known to Boynton fans from Rhinoceros Tap), Philadelphia Chickens is that rarest of kids' musical discs—one whose inimitable lyrics and music make it as sing-along, dance-along, cluck-along for parents as it is for their children. User Submitted Philadelphia Chickens ReviewsNovember 3, 2008 Very Entertaining with Wide Age Appeal I bought this book and CD for entertainment on our summer road trips and it has quickly become a favorite of all 3 of my children (ages 14 months, 5 and 8). The tunes are toe-tapping and fun to listen and sing to. The lyrics are funny and easily understood so that kids can learn the songs. I highly recommend the book and CD -- makes a great gift for new big brothers and sisters when a baby is born. October 21, 2008 The best children's album I have heard I love this album. There are only two or three songs that I don't like, but several that are my favorites. I actually laughed out loud when I first listened to some of the lyrics. My five year old loves it and my three month old seems to as well. Definitely worth the extra dollar or so to get the illustrated book. I can't wait to get the other Boynton cd's. October 9, 2008 Music for kids that adults will love Sandra Boynton has elevated the genre of children's music to an all-time high. The ubiquitous recycled children's songs with little musical value are thankfully absent from her album. Boynton's lyrics are delightful with accompanying music that adults will recognize from the mainstream. Jazz, ballads, imaginary Broadway hits come together for great family entertainment. This purchase will give you two treats in one. Along with the CD, Boynton's book is a treasure of zany sketches and musical scores. If you have one CD/book to buy for the child in your life, this is it. The only CD that our family likes as much is Boynton's Blue Moo album. Both are wise purchases. August 6, 2008 Absolutely Delightful!! I bought this for my autistic son when he was small as a way to help engage him. We sang and read together every night for months. It left such an impression on me, that when I discovered that my son had lost the CD, I became a little panicky. I really think Philadelphia Chickens is destined to be a children's classic. If you want to delight and entertain, this is the way to go. The Boyton/Ford collaborations have become my new favorite baby gift. If I know you and like you and you're pregnant, you better make room on your bookshelf 'cause you're getting these CDs. They are just too much fun. July 30, 2008 Jack Loves the tune "Cows" "Cows, we're remarkable cows, and wherever we go it's a Fabulous show, Yes we are Cows - COWS !!!" We have to here this song ever time we get buckled in the car and start down the driveway, and It never gets Old, great Cd Fun,fun,fun !! April 25, 2008 Loads of fun We purchased this along with Blue Moo for our 4 yr old grandaughter and we love them both. Have loads of fun dancing with her to the music. February 14, 2008 Matthew G. Rosenberger, Publisher, ABC Philadelphia: Travel Guides for Kids After recently purchasing another copy of this to give as a birthday gift I am reminded of how much our family has enjoyed these songs over the years. As a child, I remember listening to Free to be You and Me and I believe Philadelphia Chickens belongs in the same category-it is creative and fun-it is a classic! January 20, 2008 LOVE this CD MY whole family LOVES this CD. There are only about 3 songs that we generally skip over, the rest are all really really great!!!! I would recommend this for anyone with kids who wants to also enjoy music with them. It's not boring at all!!!! January 2, 2008 Kids love it My two year old and several of her two and three year old friends who we have since introduced to it love the songs. I think it's pretty cute and not annoying like most kiddie music. My husband really likes it. The songs are catchy and varied. I highly recommend it. December 13, 2007 Can't get some of these tunes out of my head! I'm really enjoying this album! I bought it for my 7-month-old son, who, while I know is too young to truly enjoy the music now, certainly enjoys hearing some of these songs. The lyrics are easy to learn. I sing the Belly Button song to him and his face lights up. This will be an album we can enjoy together for years to come! I've heard Dog Train and love it--must buy that next!
