America: A Patriotic Primer is a succinct history of the United States, an ABC of the principles on which this country was founded, and a book for children and families to pore over, discuss, and cherish.

A is for America,
the land that we love.
B is for the
Birthday
of this country of ours....

To choose the twenty-six people and ideas that comprise the book, Lynne Cheney has drawn on a lifetime of learning about the American past, and on the inspiration that comes from witnessing recent history firsthand. Illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser imbues Mrs. Cheney's words with childlike joy through her exuberant drawings. Together they have created a patriotic primer, a book that teaches history by celebrating the diversity, tenacity, and faith of the American people.

This A to Z of America frames the story -- and the miracle -- of our country.

America A Patriotic Primer
This is the second book I have purchased by Lynne Cheney. I purchase this for my eight year old daughter. The book goes through the alphabet giving bits of information about America. My daughter loved it. It gives just enough information to keep her interested. Loved the illustrations by Robin Preiss Glasser. I highly recommend.

America A Patriotic Primer
Lynne Cheney loves America and loves children. You have to open and look at the pages to appreciate all the wonderful facets; artwork, history, family, love of a nation. She helps us love and appreciate our nation. Our nation benefits when people are reading Lynn's books to children or young and old are reading this and the other books written by Lynne.

Left wing anti-semites don't read this
Why is it that outside Savage and Coulter it is the lefties among us that use the most intemperate language. The absurdity of an anti-semite calling a reasoned intelligent woman like Ms. Cheney a Nazi is laughable. Take a look in the mirror pal

YIPPIE-SKIPPIE, Mrs. Cheney!
With patriotic colors of red and blue, symbolic frames and borders full of educational themed graphics of brotherhood, victories and celebrations, the pages of this book BURST with motion "from sea to shining sea". Each page softly depicts the heart-felt words of freedom, equality, constitution, declaration, patriotism, rights, valor and heroes. The modernized historical quotations such as "The noblest question in the world is: What good may I do in it?" from Benjamin Franklin is most encouraging for children who are looking for 'action' around every corner... and what child isn't? My favorite page is "Y... is for YOU and all you will be in this greatest of countries, the land of the free." What a lovely way to connect America's children with their country at an early age while providing a foundational glimpse of the development of America's backbone. YIPPIE-SKIPPIE, Mrs. Cheney... way to go!

Primer: look it up, axe-grinders
Cheney wrote this as an historical primer, a guide to the basic elements of U.S. history. While it is not a "warts and all" tome, it is meant to spur kids to pursue a further interest in the topic. Given the basic facts that she presents (in a wonderfully scaffolded way that can be used for kids from 1 to 10 and possibly older), Cheney provides parents with an opportunity to show their children that this nation is something to be immensely proud of while leaving room for discussion of our mistakes as well.

And for the record, "N is for Native Americans... who came here first" may offend some but the simple statement begs kids to ask "well then... WHAT HAPPENED?".

Don't let the discussion scare you.

An important book
In this time of war and self-doubt and division, Lynne Cheney writes a book for the most underserved population -- children. While a search of the word "America" shows up Jon Stewart drivel, it's good to know that there is a decent book for kids to present a positive image of the greatest country on Earth.

A Glowing Tribute to a Mighty Nation
"We live in a land of shining cities and natural splendors, a beautiful land made more beautiful still by our commitment to freedom. I wrote this book because I want my grandchildren to...know they are part of a nation whose citizens enjoy liberty and opportunity such as have never been known before." So says Lynne Cheney in America: A Patriotic Primer.

America is an enormously complex topic to cover, but Cheney does an admirable job. Using an alphabet format ("E is for Equality), the author manages to cover a lot of ground and do it well. Children will read about concepts such as tolerance and freedom; about leaders, from Native Americans, Founders Fathers and suffragettes to presidents and Martin Luther King; and about important places, such as Ellis Island and Yorktown. The "Concluding Notes" provide more in-depth information about the people and events mentioned, and even the Bill of Rights. Mrs. Cheney hopes not only that children will enjoy it themselves, but also "that it will most often be read and discussed by parents and children together."

Robin Preiss Glasser's illustrations and border drawings are a treat. Fascinating in themselves, they keep discrete pieces of information clearly separate, yet bring a cohesiveness to the book.

American History-A to Z- A lesson in bigotry
My co-worker brought this book for me to read. After glancing at the author, I took a deep breathe. I too, like Mrs. Cheney, am a lover of history. As an Anishnabe woman, I am offended at "N..is for Native American..who came here first." I would suggest that Mrs. Cheney,a "Native American" read and understand the TRUE history of this country, that I too, love so much. We must not fail to teach other perspectives. Are Patriotism and Freedom only " Native American" values? We must not fail to acknowledge the continued struggle of all people who have been victim to Colonization. America is Indian, African, Latin, Persian, Arabic, Chinese, Japenese, European, Vietnamese, Filipino, and Korean. I think this book promotes ignorance and misinformation. There are better ways to teach "T..for Tolerance." That is by promoting a univeral understanding of history.
I thought this book was lame..Couldn't she think of anything better than "Z..is the end of the alphabet" perhaps Z for Zany Propaganda..

P.S. I really liked the illustrations: charming, cute, whimsical.
