A Child's Anthology of Poetry Review
The simple pleasures of reading and listening to poetry are unforgettable memories of childhood, and, for young minds, poetry is the gateway to an interest in language and storytelling. By bringing together essential classic children's poems with the best of modern and contemporary international poetry, A Child's Anthology of Poetry is a delightful and indispensable introduction to literature and life for the young reader. From Robert Frost to Maya Angelou, Shel Silverstein to Emily Dickinson, this collection emphasizes the fun and diversity of poetry, providing readers with a wellrounded, inclusive selection of poets. With the guidance of a special advisory board of esteemed poets-Deborah Digges, Gerald Early, Louise Glüick, Jorle Graham, Edward Hirsch, Garrett Hongo, Maxine Kumin, Cynthia MacDonald, William Matthews, Thylias Moss, Ishmael Reed, Sarah Rosenstock, and Mark Strand-the editors have fashioned a volume that encourages parents not to underestimate the ability of their children to understand and absorb the music of the written word, a volume that will come to be treasured for a lifetime by generations of readers.Featuring artwork by Tom Pohrt, the wellknown illustrator of Crow and Weasel, and including favorite poems such as William Blake's "The Tyger" and Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky" as well as more recent classics such as Elizabeth Bishop's "Sestina and Theodore Roethke's "My Papa's Waltz," A Child's Anthology of Poetry is full of surprises and lyric charm. User Submitted A Child's Anthology of Poetry ReviewsDecember 30, 2008 Perfect present Arrived on time, excellent condition. According to my 8 yr old grand daughter, it is perfect. She loves to read and was very excited to receive this book. November 25, 2008 Review from a mom I liked the book but was a bit disappointed in some of the poem selections. Overall, a good purchase for our family. Not great for children under eight. May 15, 2007 A Treasure of an Anthology I found this book on a shelf in a second-grade classroom (I'm an assistant teacher)and on flipping through it recognized several favorite poets. Further reading prompted me to ask if I could borrow it--there are so many amazing works in this book, from beloved childhood favs to thought-provoking new ones. As a writer and poet as well as a teacher I think this is an exceptionally versatile book, well worth reading by adults and children. June 22, 2006 Disappointing As stated by another reviewer, the book has just a few black & white small illustrations: the cover is deceitful. And I don't know what to do with such poems as "Don't write poems about what's happening. / Nothing is born or dies in poetry's presence. / Next to it, life is a static sun / without warm or light..." (Carlos Drummond de Andrade, a poet I appreciate, but not for children). There are too many abstract, religious and moral topics, and the pleasure of playing with words and worlds is scarce. September 23, 2005 Gray and dissapointing I was less than thrilled with this book, for which I had high expectations. For one things, the "illustrated by" suggestion on the cover is a joke. There are very very few, small illustrations. Also, I find that many of the topics of poems in the book are inappropriate or incomprehensible to kids. Likewise, many of the poems have language that is not practical for kids and will likely only confuse them. May 5, 2005 Excellent range I bought this book on my elder daughter's birth day so that I'd have a copy of "Winken, Blinken, and Nod" to read to her. Since then I've wandered through "Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening", "Ozymandius", and many others. October 21, 2004 Best poetry book for young and old I just bought this book for my mother, who is elderly. It has all the famous poems I remember from when I was a child. I am buying another copy to read with my kids. If you have just one book of poetry on your shelf-- this should be it. August 25, 1996 A wonderful book for children and adults! I read this book to my four-year-old daughter every night before bed. We're already marking our favorites so we can return to them regularly. June 6, 1996 Excellent bedtime reading for parents and children alike! The editor, Elizabeth Hauge Sword, has pulled together an eclectic collection of poetry for parents and children of all ages. Many old standards along with contemporary poets' works are included. My daughters, ages 6 and 2 1/2, look forward to bedtime poems every night For more A Child's Anthology of Poetry reviews click here.
